Behnaz Amani in peril in Iran

Several months ago a group of American poets  signed a letter in solidarity with jailed Iranian poets. In the meantime, the Iranian Writers Action Committee, a new organization, has been set up by Iranians outside the country. They have compiled an extensive list of writers who are in danger. You will find Behnaz Amani on this list. Our initial letter was not designed to get media attention in the U.S. but rather to reach out to the poets whose names we mentioned. Many of those poets read our letter and expressed appreciation. Behnaz Amani, through a friend of hers, reached out to me because of our letter. It is painful to watch the video of Behnaz Amani reading while knowing the brutal circumstance of her life. Rage as we do against the government that does such harm, perhaps you may may feel, as I do, almost powerless. Behnaz’s audio recording (listen) shows me that the “almost” in "almost powerless" is where we meet, it’s the place of our solidarity. Our new letter is below:

We are deeply concerned about the fate of Behnaz Amani — Iranian poet, translator, and assistant professor of English Literature.  According to the Iranian Writers Action Committee (IWAC), Behanz Amani has temporarily released from prison on bail. After her release, she received a diagnosis of aggressive cervical cancer. Her brutal 46-day long detention in the notorious Gharchak Varamin Prison has contributed to critical postponement in her cancer diagnosis and treatment.

In October, Behnaz Amani ran afoul of Iranian authorities after signing of a statement by the university professors protesting the arrest of students. She was immediately targeted by the security forces of her affiliated university. Just two days after signing the letter –– not so different than this one –– Behnaz Amani was  interrogated by security forcec at her university and two days after that abducted in front of her house and transferred to Gharchak Varamin Prison.

We are a group of American poets who write in solidarity with Behnaz Amani and support her right to peacefully protest the brutal and extrajudicial persecution of her students and many others  in Iran.  We make this plea: Do not send Behnaz Amani back to prison, under any circumstances. Anyone who takes part in incarcerating her again will be held responsible for what happens to her and for any consequent deterioration in her medical condition.

Feb 6, 2022: I am happy to report that Behnaz Amani will not go back to jail. The judge, citing our letter and the concern for her health, gave her a fine but not further inceration. Here is the BBC report:

Behnaz Amani reads her poem, "Do You Hear the-Gaze of the Dead":

------------------------------------
