The Footbridge

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

mi ô maman ô ti-ti

Not knowing to read and write leads to ostracism, in this world of so-called modernity
I’ve seen my mother suffer the tough pangs of illiteracy
This total stranger, giving her the eye, humiliating her because she wanted just to know the number of a bus
On top of her daily toils, not knowing how to read and write for mama was a curse
But each time life would present a trial,
Mama knew to laugh at herself, it was her style
Housewife and vendor at the market, mama woke up at dawn
So that we, her kids, wouldn’t lack even a pen
She would go to bed so late when her daily beat was over
But she would take care to make sure that we had done all our homework
Of letters and numbers, mama didn’t know a thing
But she had made a bet with life that tomorrow her children wouldn’t be hooligans
So she invested her soul, mind, and body
Failing that to offer us comfort … insolently
Mama encompassed us with comfort … lovingly
And here I weigh my words to say it
Early on mama had understood that school was by far the best gift that she could give
Even if very often, we needed to wait
Fourteen hours for the only cuisine of the day
Mama would cook it with pride
While adding a healthy dose of loving spice
Of her illiterate state, mama never held any spite
Au contraire, she was so happy to see her children grow, to learn to read and write
Her whole life she wiped away humiliations, submissions, frustrations
However each school day, mama would accompany us with her benedictions
Not knowing how to read and write is maybe not the worst fate
But I understand better now the suffering that mama endured each day.

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a, bi-bi, ci-ci, di-di, fi-fi, mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

And papa, oh papa … with his meager revenue, he couldn’t guarantee us a bequest
So he’d gather us and say, mes enfants, school is for you the best investment
I still hold in my eyes his pains at the start of each school year
Drop by drop he would buy … notebooks … textbooks … T-squares
And these you can imagine came from the sidewalk vendor
Each year, we would have to wait for January … February
To get our school supplies in their entirety
But papa never gave up on us
Papa never abandoned us
Papa never gave his notice
Three even four years to replace our old khakis
So papa would assemble us again and say to us, mes petits
“To be jealous of one’s friends, to envy doesn’t serve a thing”
Because the truth is no one really knows what troubles the neighbors face
Each one … going … to the rhythm … of his own pace
And when by some misunderstanding our teachers would kick us out of class
Because a father doesn’t cry in front of his children
Because a father doesn’t cry in front of his children
Because a father doesn’t cry in front of his children

Calmly, composed, papa would breathe in
And he again as always would teach us his favorite lesson
Mes enfants, always keep your dignity through every tribulation
Keep your dignity through every tribulation

And so, from year to year, by hook or crook, my brothers, my sisters and me, we made our way
With the support of papa and mama, all along our course, we have gleaned here and there our degrees

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a, bi-bi, ci-ci, di-di, fi-fi, mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

And so, I learned from my mother
I understood from my father
That school is the only bridge for us outsiders
That offers us humanity
So as not to huddle at the bottom of the ladder
Of society

The spankings, the feet in the air, the push-ups, the four strong kids
Each time that I happened to botch, to fail a quiz
In these times, I would pray to the Holy Father, that He would come paddle the teacher
I wanted to see my father seize the teacher
I wanted to hear my mother read the riot act to the teacher
But I never dared to say it to them
From fear that I would suffer the same punishment at home
Because in those times contrary to today, the teacher had the higher station
And papa and mama would tell us each punishment was reinforcing our education
And so, mesdames, mesdemoiselles, messieurs,
I had to learn, to relearn
To study, to study again
To work, to re-work on my letters and numbers
My numbers and letters
So that today you can listen to me reverently like you would a preacher
It’s true, I didn’t acquire the science of Memel Fôté
I don’t have the resistant pen of Bernard Dadié
I can’t write the sublime quatrains of Zaourou Zadi
I don’t have the creative genius of Bouabré Bruly
May I be allowed to render a stirring homage to these eminent brains
However on my humble plane
I gathered cultures, consciousness, knowledge
From accountant to marketer, slameur today as you know
And if today, having you in front of me, I extract an ounce of admiration
I owe it to my teachers for my formation
And so permit me to tell them today
The only word worth anything … papa, mama … dear teachers … merci

La Passerelle

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a, bi-bi, ci-ci, di-di, fi-fi, mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a,bi-bi,ci-ci, di-di,fi-fi,mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

Jamais papa n’a démissionné

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a,bi-bi,ci-ci, di-di,fi-fi,mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça

Alors Mesdames, mesdemoiselles, messieurs,
Papa, maman … Chers maitres … Merci

Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
a-a,bi-bi,ci-ci, di-di,fi-fi,mi-mi, ni-ni
mi ô maman ô ti-ti
Cê-cê, cô-cô, ti-ti a ça
