Paradiso’s form consistently end-stops most tercets. Andrews’ recasting converts each tercet unit into a paragraph unit and retains the end-stopped punctuation. The beginning of a paragraph unit is indicated by the indentation of four spaces on the page. Andrews mostly excerpts the rhythmic coherence of whole paragraph units for the reading, and also takes the license to excerpt parts of paragraphs at times. Paradiso’s tercets can be corresponded to Lip Service’s paragraphs by first consulting Lip Service’s appendix corresponding Paradiso’s Cantos to Lip Service’s sections and then corresponding the Paradiso tercets in Italian’s end-stopped punctuations (English translations irregularly alter punctuations and their placements) with Lip Service’s paragraphs’ punctuations. There are numerous anomalies by compositional license to this correspondence, such as different corresponding punctuations and multiple Paradiso tercets casted into single Lip Service paragraphs, but the overall regularity of the method allows anomalies to be framed as such, enabling accurate correspondences of the whole.
Andrews also uses compositional license in his organization of Paradiso’s Cantos into Lip Service’s ten planet sections. Paradiso does not raise titles over its movement through its ten heavenly spheres while Lip Service titles its planet sections explicitly. Notably, Andrews makes decisions about Paradiso’s transitory Cantos, Cantos that begin in one heavenly sphere and end in the next, corresponding to the beginning or ending planet in Lip Service, expanding Saturn’s designated amount of material in Lip Service, and combining Paradiso’s Primum Mobile and Empyrean regions into Lip Service’s Primum Mobile section to balance Lip Service’s structure on the number ten:
Paradiso: | Lip Service: |
1-2: Earth -> Moon | 1-2: Earth |
3-4: Moon 5: Moon -> Mercury |
3-5: Moon |
6-7: Mercury | 6-7: Mercury |
8-9: Venus | 8-9: Venus |
10-13: Sun | 10-13: Sun |
14: Sun -> Mars 15-17: Mars |
14-17: Mars |
18: Mars -> Jupiter 19-20: Jupiter |
18-20: Jupiter |
21: Saturn 22: Saturn -> Fixed Stars 23-26: Fixed Stars 27: Fixed Stars -> Primum Mobile |
21-23: Saturn 24-27: Fixed Stars |
28-29: Primum Mobile 30: Primum Mobile -> Empyrean 31-33: Empyrean |
28-33: Primum Mobile |
Andrews’ explicit titling of planet sections, which he states before each sections’ material in the reading, retains the structural drama of progressing through the sections and frees the material from having to describe the progression representationally, as in Paradiso.
Andrews’ recasting can be formally understood through three provisional textural categories: signifier chains, syntactic syntheses, and direct statements. Nearly every paragraph contains all of these formal textures; for instance, the first substantial paragraph in the reading, from “Moon 2”:
And this
bulimics in stilettos crucified in the negligé-
watchful gaze of the surrogate uterus –
if you dress well, you won’t be lonely
his precaution, her reputation, flashbulbed
fake mute beat hands to side of debt
tart digress
ads commemorate my awareness, big hair being
most fashionable: overdressed & overlooked, the glance
becomes a sexual part.
- Signifier chains: “flashbulbed / fake mute beat hands to side of debt / tart digress”
- Syntactic syntheses: “bulimics in stilettos crucified in the negligé- / watchful gaze of the surrogate uterus”
- Direct statements: “if you dress well, you won’t be lonely / his precaution, her reputation”; “ads commemorate my awareness, big hair being / most fashionable: overdressed & overlooked, the glance / becomes a sexual part.”
The signifier chains kinetically augment the syntactic syntheses’ polysemous torque and the direct statements’ incisive affects. The textural categories are not rigid: syntactic hierarchicalization frequently emerges from signifier chains and phrasal units frequently straddle and dissolve categorization into syntactic syntheses or direct statements. The amorphous shifts of texture and correspondent attention are a primary experience and semantic condition of the work. Andrews’ high performative reading style charts one possible textural course through the text, delineating the capacity for innumerable textural readings.
This textural dissolve and intra-paragraph tension enables Lip Service to be coherently excerpted in a way that Paradiso cannot. The tonal progression subtly shifts over the tour through the planet sections: generally, from one-directional outrage, frequently toward males, to mutual intimacy. The more the total structure is contemplated and conceptualized, the more the details unfold their subtlety. The immanence of tonal shifts in Lip Service replaces the representation of planetary movements in Paradiso. The elements of the signifier chains have no inherent connection to the tonal progression, but their contexts in relation to syntactic syntheses and direct statements in the total structure condition their semantic productions as the signifier chains (among the most adventurous formal gestures in language) mutually kinetically augment their contexts. The richness of the tour’s excerpts is indicative of the abundance of the whole work and provides inexhaustible semantic production in relistenings and rereadings.
For the interested, here is a list of correspondences between Paradiso’s text in Italian and Allen Mandelbaum’s English translation to all of the Lip Service excerpts in the reading.
