W. Mark Sutherland

W. Mark Sutherland is a Canadian intermedia artist, poet, and musician. His aesthetic practice is a hybrid that pivots on the creation of work blurring the borders between poetry, visual art, music, and performance art. His texts, objects, videos, and installations investigate the play of signs found in conflicting principles of authority between language, images, and sound and have featured in galleries, performances, festivals, and solo shows throughout the world. Sutherland’s pioneering work in new media includes e-poetry, videopoetry, and sonotexts. His Code X e-poem-installation was featured in his touring Scratch exhibition (2002–2005). Code X was also the first standalone new media project published by Coach House Books (2001). Sutherland’s most recent publication is the exhibition catalogue Time Signatures (Visual Arts Centre of Clarington, Canada).
