John Mateer

John Mateer’s publications include Ex-White: South African Poems (Klagenfurt: Sisyphus Verlag, 2009), The West: Australian Poems 1989–2009 (Fremantle: Fremantle Press, 2010), Southern Barbarians (Sydney: Giramondo, 2011), and This Dark Book/Este Livro Escuro (trans. Înes Dias, Lisbon: Averno, 2012). His work has also been anthologized in The New Century of South African Poetry (ed. Michael Chapman, Johannesburg: AD Donker, 2002) and Imagine Africa, Volume 1 (ed. Breyten Breytenbach, Brooklyn: Pirogue Collective, 2011). He has read his work at various international festivals, among them the Stockholm International Poetry Festival, Poetry Africa in Durban, and PEN’s Free the Word in London. His book Unbelievers, or ‘The Moor,’ which surveys Islamic vestiges in Iberia and along the Indian Ocean, is forthcoming.
